There are winter weddings, and then there are winter weddings that feel like they were made for the season.
Katelyn and Chris’s wedding day was one of those days. With fresh snow outside, black bridesmaid dresses, deep green accents, greenery throughout the reception, and the warm glow of candlelight, their wedding at St. Pius X and The Armory felt cozy, elegant, and just a little bit magical.
The vision was a subtle nod to the holidays without turning the day into a Christmas party, and I think they absolutely nailed it.
Katelyn and Chris were married at St. Pius X Church in Granger, Indiana, on a beautiful snowy winter afternoon.
One of my favorite things about winter weddings is how much atmosphere the season naturally gives you. The snow outside created such a beautiful contrast to the warmth inside the church, and the whole day had that quiet, cozy feeling that makes winter weddings so special.
Katelyn spent the morning with her mom and bridesmaids, getting ready and waiting for the moment when everyone would see her in her dress for the first time. She and Chris decided not to do a first look, which meant there was an extra layer of anticipation leading up to the ceremony.
Instead, Katelyn had a few special first looks of her own with her mom, mother-in-law, and bridesmaids.
And, of course, there was one reaction we absolutely had to get: Chris seeing Katelyn walk down the aisle.
That moment was worth the wait.
Katelyn envisioned an elegant winter wedding with black bridesmaid dresses, greenery, green accents, and touches of red throughout the day.
The details felt festive without being overly themed. Rather than going all-in on traditional Christmas decor, the couple incorporated the feeling of the holidays through greenery, subtle red accents, and lots of warm candlelight.
It created exactly the atmosphere Katelyn described: cozy, romantic, and welcoming.
The black bridesmaid dresses also looked incredible against the winter landscape, while the greenery added just enough color and texture to keep everything feeling organic and timeless.
A snowy wedding day can be a photographer’s dream.
There is something about taking wedding portraits outside in the winter that feels completely different from portraits in any other season. The muted landscape, soft winter light, and snow-covered surroundings create a really beautiful backdrop without needing much else.
And while winter comes with the obvious challenge of an early sunset, I love finding little pockets of the day where we can step outside and make the most of whatever light and weather we are given.
For Katelyn and Chris, the snow made their portraits feel especially connected to the season. Rather than trying to make the day look like anything other than what it was, we embraced the winter weather and let it become part of their story.
After the ceremony, everyone headed to The Armory in South Bend for the reception.
The Armory was the perfect setting for the warm, intimate feeling Katelyn had envisioned. Between the greenery, candlelight, and winter-inspired details, the reception space felt elegant but still incredibly inviting.
After cocktail hour, Katelyn and Chris made their entrance and the celebration really began.
With a large wedding party, plenty of family surrounding them, and so many people who clearly meant a lot to them, the reception was full of the kind of moments that make wedding days memorable long after the formalities are over.
And honestly, those are some of my favorite parts of a wedding day.
The little interactions between family members. The way friends react during speeches. The people on the dance floor who completely forget there is a photographer in the room. The hugs that happen when nobody is expecting them.
Those are the photographs I want to remember.
Katelyn and Chris’s wedding at St. Pius X and The Armory was elegant without feeling overly formal, festive without feeling themed, and beautiful without losing the people at the center of it.
The snow, the candlelight, the greenery, the black dresses, the anticipation of walking down the aisle without seeing each other beforehand—it all came together to create a wedding day that felt completely like them.
And I think that’s what makes a wedding photograph so meaningful.
It’s not just about how beautiful everything looked.
It’s about remembering exactly how it felt.
Congratulations, Katelyn and Chris. It was such a joy to document your beautiful winter wedding day.
