There are some wedding days that feel timeless from beginning to end, and John and Jessica’s summer wedding at Notre Dame and Palais Royale was exactly that.
From a ceremony inside the breathtaking Basilica of the Sacred Heart to portraits around the Notre Dame campus and an elegant evening reception at the Palais Royale, every part of their day felt intentional, classic, and completely them.
Their vision was sophisticated without being overdone: white florals with subtle blush tones and greenery, black bridesmaid dresses, a black-and-white dance floor, and a reception filled with candlelight. The result was a wedding day that felt romantic, refined, and effortlessly elegant.
John and Jessica chose the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame for their ceremony — and it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful setting for a wedding.
The Basilica’s incredible architecture created a breathtaking backdrop for their ceremony, while the summer day outside brought a completely different feeling to their portraits afterward.
They chose not to do a first look, so there was an added sense of anticipation leading up to the ceremony. Jessica spent the morning getting ready at Sorin House with her bridesmaids, mom, sister, and mother-in-law, while John got ready in another wing of the Sorin House with his groomsmen.
Jessica also had a special first look with her dad before heading to the Basilica.
The morning was filled with those quiet little moments that make wedding photographs feel personal. Getting ready with the people closest to you, the anticipation before walking down the aisle, and the realization that the day you’ve been planning is finally here.
John and Jessica’s ceremony took place at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, one of Notre Dame’s most iconic landmarks.
Following the ceremony, we took a few quick portraits inside the Basilica before heading outside to join their guests.
And they didn’t simply walk out to their guests.
A bagpiper escorted John and Jessica to the Basilica steps, where their family and friends gathered for a large group photograph.
It’s one of those moments that feels both grand and incredibly personal — the newlyweds surrounded by everyone who came to celebrate them.
After the ceremony, we spent time around the Notre Dame campus taking portraits of John and Jessica.
They had a few meaningful locations they wanted to incorporate into their wedding photographs, including the Golden Dome, God Quad, the Grotto, the lakes, and the Law Building.
With so many iconic locations around campus, Notre Dame gives couples an incredible amount of variety for wedding portraits while still keeping everything connected to one place.
And on a summer wedding day, the combination of historic architecture, lush greenery, and open skies makes for photographs that feel both classic and distinctly Notre Dame.
For John and Jessica, the goal was a clean, crisp look that allowed the architecture, landscape, and natural moments to speak for themselves.
After portraits around Notre Dame, the celebration continued at the Palais Royale in South Bend.
The reception design perfectly reflected John and Jessica’s vision for the day.
The bridesmaids wore black, white florals were accented with subtle blush and greenery, and the black-and-white dance floor added a sophisticated finishing touch.
Rather than relying on a bold color palette, the design focused on texture, candlelight, clean lines, and timeless details.
The result was elegant without feeling overly formal — exactly the kind of reception that feels just as beautiful years later as it did on the wedding day.
John and Jessica’s reception kicked off with a grand entrance complete with water sparklers, followed by their first dance with even more sparkle.
Their evening included so many personal touches, from the cake cutting and welcome blessing to heartfelt speeches from their closest family and friends.
And then came the dancing.
With the band playing from 7:35 until 11pm, the dance floor became the center of the celebration.
Later in the evening, the DJ took over and kept the party going.
One of the things I love about photographing a wedding is the little details that tell you something about the people getting married.
John and Jessica had plenty.
They planned a special father-daughter dance that started with a slow version of “Stand By Me” before transitioning into “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” their favorite song, to get the dance floor started.
After dinner, guests could enjoy a cannoli cart and pizza because one dessert is simply not enough for a great wedding and everyone loves a good late night snack!
And then there was the Palais Royale balcony.
John and Jessica specifically wanted a photograph of the two of them from behind, standing on the balcony and looking out over all of their guests. They also planned candles along the balcony for a more dramatic photograph from below.
Those are the kinds of details that make a wedding gallery feel like their wedding rather than simply a beautiful collection of wedding photographs.
As the evening got darker, we also had the chance to sneak away for one more photograph in front of their custom “Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Esposito” sign.
After an entire day surrounded by family, friends, architecture, flowers, dancing, and celebration, having a few quiet minutes together for a nighttime portrait was the perfect way to capture another side of their wedding day.
The photograph feels completely different from the bright summer portraits around Notre Dame earlier in the day — and that’s one of the reasons I love building variety into a wedding gallery.
John and Jessica’s wedding day brought together so many things I love about photographing weddings in South Bend.
A historic and breathtaking ceremony location.
Beautiful summer light.
Iconic Notre Dame architecture.
An elegant reception at the Palais Royale.
And, most importantly, two people surrounded by the people they love.
Their vision was clean, classic, romantic, and timeless — and every part of the day came together beautifully.
From the Basilica to the Golden Dome, from the quiet moments before the ceremony to a packed dance floor at the Palais Royale, John and Jessica’s wedding was a celebration that felt every bit as meaningful as it looked.
And I’m so grateful I got to document it.
