Let’s be real: family photos at a wedding can feel like a logistical nightmare. Between trying to get everyone to smile, making sure nobody wanders off, and wrangling large groups of people, it can be a lot. But don’t worry—I’m here to help you navigate the process and create smooth, stress-free family portraits that will be timeless keepsakes. Here’s how I, as your wedding photographer, work with you to make create seamless family photos on your wedding day.
The key to stress-free family photos is planning ahead. As your photographer, I’m here to work with you to craft a timeline that includes enough time for family groupings—without eating up your whole wedding day. We’ll work together to figure out exactly when these photos should happen, keeping in mind everything else on the schedule.
A big tip I always give my couples: family portraits are best scheduled right after the ceremony. Why? Because everyone is already gathered and looking their best (no scrambling to track down family members who are late or distracted by the bar!). After the ceremony is the perfect time to gather everyone for photos while the energy is high, but before anyone has too much wine in their system!
You probably don’t need 20 group shots with every single family member—trust me, I get it. That’s why I recommend narrowing down the list of must-have groupings before the big day. You don’t want to spend your entire post-ceremony time chasing down relatives for random photos. Think about who you really want in these shots. Start with immediate family—parents, siblings, grandparents—and then move on to extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) if there’s time. If you’re close to certain friends, you might want to throw them in the mix too.
I’ll help guide you through the process of creating a photo list, but here’s how I tell couples to organize their groupings:
Here’s an example of what your list might look like:
1. Bride & Groom with Both Parents
2. Bride & Groom with Siblings
3. Bride & Groom with Grandparents
This list ensures that no one is forgotten, and it keeps everything running smoothly. You’ll be able to enjoy your cocktail hour while I handle the photo organization!
I know how it goes: people get distracted, wander off to grab drinks, or get into long conversations. It happens! That’s why I always encourage couples to choose a point person—someone who knows the family well, like a bridesmaid, groomsman, or family member—to help me wrangle the groups and keep things on track.
Here’s how it works: once we’re ready for family photos, I’ll get everyone together and start calling out names. Your point person will help keep an eye on people who might be off mingling or distracted, gently reminding them that it’s time for their photos. This way, I can focus on directing the group, and you can relax and enjoy the moment!
Another little trick I tell couples: make an announcement (either through the officiant or a family member) before the ceremony ends so everyone knows they need to stick around for family photos. A quick heads-up can go a long way in keeping people from wandering off once the vows are said.
Bonus Tip: If you’re really concerned about family members wandering off during photos, I also suggest giving them a heads-up about the importance of family portraits early in the planning process. This way, everyone knows that after the ceremony, they’ll need to stay in the vicinity for photos, so we can get through everything quickly without feeling rushed. Give them a time and maybe encourage them to arrive early if needed.
Creating seamless family photos on your wedding day doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little bit of planning, some clear communication with your family, and a solid timeline, you can breeze through the group shots and get back to enjoying your celebration. As your photographer, I’ll make sure everything flows smoothly, and we’ll work together to create stunning memories of your family that will last forever.
