This studio newborn session in Indianapolis was full of life and love, and it was really beautiful. Charne reached out about newborn photos and opted to shoot in my downtown Indianapolis studio space. I love getting to work with families in the studio because of the neutral backdrop and minimalist space. It helps them to show up really well and I believe it allows them to relax and focus on each other.
We began the studio newborn session on the blue velvet sofa
The studio space has a gorgeous blue sofa, perfect for any sort of session. The blue seriously goes with everyone I’ve shot in this space. Charne and her family wore comfortable outfits for their first look, mixed with blues, creams, and tans. They got settled on the sofa and we got a mix of candid and posed shots.
Embracing the chaos is beautiful
When a newborn client comes to me, I try my best to encourage them to embrace the beautiful chaos that is life. I speak to this in Episode 4 of my podcast, The Photo Concierge Podcast. Especially if my client has other children in addition to the newborn, things might get a little wild at times, and that’s ok. I try to encourage parents to just flow with it and go with whatever is happening. The reason is because I’m focusing on the connection in front of me just as much as a shot with everyone smiling at the camera.
For Charne’s family, their toddler was so curious and wanted to check out things, wiggle, and move around. Because of that, I was able to photograph their family in a really real way, and captured split second moments between them. He sat for some shots looking at the camera, then would move around the space. It allowed for so much variety in their session.

I keep going back to the word, connection. Lifestyle newborn sessions allow for a lot of connection and moments of connection between family members. I loved the set of the family on the bed, snuggling together to see new baby sister. They laughed together, tickled their toddler, and consoled baby when she cried.
We finished their session standing, in the space and taking a mix of candid and posed shots. I loved how the colors looked together, and how this sweet family engaged with one another.
